Port Hope became the known by it's name in 1834, with a total of 1500 residents. But it was years before that in 1793, even before Canada became a country, that 4 families of English decent arrived to the area and named it home. Today Port Hope is a community of just under 20 000 people.
Out of Port Hope has come the likes of The Great Farini (a.k.a. William Hunt) who successfully challenged the most famous tightrope walker of his time, Blondin, in stunts over the Niagara Gorge in 1860. As well as Joseph Scriven who wrote the words of one of the world's bestloved hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."
